The attempt to appeal to the UN Special Rapporteur in the Sanzhar Bokayev case raised questions from human rights defender and public figure Serik Barkamalov. The Department of Sanitary and Epidemiological Control of the Karaganda Region has confirmed that on 28 September 2026, a patient with a preliminary diagnosis of "anthrax" was admitted to the multidisciplinary hospital in Balkhash. The patient's tests, 9 meat samples and 28 swabs, returned negative results. The diagnosis has been changed to "Bacterial infection, unspecified".

The agency explained that the "DSP" classification permits refusal, but requires specifying the number and date of the order.
