The Department of the Agency for Financial Monitoring is investigating the activities of the financial pyramid R.O.I. in Almaty. 275 people have been recognised as victims in the case, and the total damage amounted to 217 million tenge.
HOW THE SCHEME WORKED
According to the Agency for Financial Monitoring (AFM), the organisation R.O.I. operated under the guise of a consumer cooperative. Citizens were offered programmes for acquiring movable and immovable property. Participants concluded share accumulation agreements and paid in money.
According to the investigation's version, the funds of new participants were directed towards payments to earlier members rather than to genuine business activity.
WHERE THE MONEY WENT
The investigation established that the organisers withdrew 94 million tenge from the cooperative to the accounts of persons connected with them, including the sole trader "Kausar". The transfers were processed as payment for consultancy services.
After legal disputes began in 2022, six more consumer cooperatives were created in Almaty: ShynSaulet, Berekeli Shanyrak, Aya-Aru, Jasmin, USCoop and Baiterek.
According to the AFM, all the organisations were controlled by the head of R.O.I. Money receipts were redirected through them, bypassing the bank accounts of the main cooperative, which had been frozen by private bailiffs.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE DETENTION
The organiser was placed in custody for two months. With the court's sanction, 25 flats, three cars and bank accounts have been seized.
The investigation is ongoing. Further details of the case are not being disclosed in accordance with Article 201 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
