How sand extraction is destroying the Ilek River in the Aktobe region
The FBK editorial office has received reports from residents of the Aktobe region concerned about the condition of the Ilek River. According to them, new quarries for the extraction of sand and sand-and-gravel mixtures are actively appearing along the floodplain. People fear that interference with the riverbed and floodplain system could have consequences not only for the ecology but also for the region's water supply.

The Ministry of Ecology stated that CCTV cameras to combat illegal dumping have been deemed "impractical", as waste is supposedly stored outside populated areas. However, data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, media publications and FBRK investigations show that dumping sites were recorded within cities too, and the government bodies themselves had previously reported on the effectiveness of cameras and digital monitoring.

The state visit of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Russia was the main event of the year and proved to be substantial in scope. The Ministry of Health has unveiled a new joint development with Kazakhtelecom – a service for checking medicine prices in the ‘Naqty Onim’ app. However, similar functionality has already existed for more than six years in the ‘DariKZ’ app, which was created by the ministry itself without the involvement of private companies.
