A police officer has been convicted of torture during the "January" events in Almaty.
"The Specialised Interdistrict Criminal Court of Almaty has issued a conviction for the use of torture (Article 146 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan) against a person brought in during the 'January' events, based on a procedural agreement to plead guilty", the city prosecutor's office press service reported.
Prosecutors proved that on 8 January 2022, an employee of the Almaly district police department used torture during an interrogation.
"As a result of the unlawful actions of the police officer, the victim suffered physical pain and suffering", the prosecutor's office reported.
The court found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to restriction of liberty for a term of 2 years and 6 months, with loss of special rank and the right to work in the civil service.
To recall, in April the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office reported on the questioning of former Minister of Internal Affairs Yerlan Turgumbayev in connection with the January events case.
At the time, it was stated that the supervisory body had evidence in the case regarding the use of torture against detained citizens in a special detention centre located in the village of Koshkarbay, Karasay district of the Almaty region.
In August, in the Ulytau region, military personnel and employees of the Committee of the Criminal Executive System (CCES) were convicted of using torture. The head of the institution and his deputy were each sentenced to 6.6 years' imprisonment. Five employees of the institution and four military personnel received sentences of between 4 and 4.5 years' imprisonment.
In October, a verdict was handed down in Karaganda against a senior detective of the Department of the Criminal Executive System (DCES) for the Karaganda and Ulytau regions, for the torture of a convicted person.
