In the Ulytau region, servicemen and employees of the Penal Enforcement Committee (PEC) were convicted for the use of torture.
"On 30 July 2024, the Specialised Inter-District Military Court for Criminal Cases pronounced a verdict against 7 employees of Institution No. 62 for the Karaganda Region and Ulytau Region of the PEC of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and 4 servicemen of Military Unit No. 6505 of the National Guard of the Republic of Kazakhstan, who used torture against 11 convicts.", the regional prosecutor's office reported.
The court found the head of the institution and his deputy guilty and sentenced them to 6.6 years' imprisonment.
Five employees of the institution and four servicemen were sentenced to between 4 and 4.5 years' imprisonment.
It is worth recalling that in March, the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office reported the questioning of former Minister of Internal Affairs Yerlan Turgumbayev in connection with the January events.
It was stated at the time that the supervisory authority had evidence in the case concerning the use of torture against detained citizens in a special detention centre located in the village of Koshmanbet, Karasay District, Almaty Region.
Meanwhile, it became known that a former subordinate of ex-Prosecutor General Kairat Kozhamzharov, Kenzhebai Zhumabekov, is implicated in the torture case. Shortly before this, it was reported that he had been taken into custody in connection with the "Khorgos case".
