From January to July this year, 95 police officers were convicted in corruption cases.

According to media reports citing the First Credit Bureau, in 80% of cases, sentences for police officers were handed down under the articles 'Bribery' and 'Fraud'.

"47 police officers were convicted of bribery, and 27 for fraud. The remaining sentences relate to offering a bribe, mediation in bribery, abuse of power, neglect of duty, and exceeding authority," the statement said.

In total this year, 557 people have been convicted in corruption cases. 182 were sentenced to imprisonment and 247 to fines totalling 3.4 billion tenge. 56 people were released from punishment.

It is noted that over the 7 months, acquittals in corruption cases were delivered only twice, in both cases involving police officers.

Recall that in early August, the former head and an inspector of the Migration Service Department (MSD), as well as a former inspector of the Auezov district police department of the Abay region, were convicted of corruption.

According to the investigation, the head of the department received a bribe from a police officer for a transfer of duty, acting through an intermediary – an MSD inspector. The bribe amount was $1,000 (476,890 tenge).

In June, the commander of the 8th company of the Shymkent patrol police regiment, Azamat Aimbertov, was sentenced to 7 years' imprisonment for receiving a large bribe through extortion.

In April, the head of the migration department of the Shymkent police department, Sungat Tugelbayev, was convicted of receiving bribes totalling $8,000. The former chief accepted the bribes for issuing residence permits and granting citizenship to foreigners. Alongside the police officer, the intermediary Akmara Soiyraz was also convicted.

In September last year, the Anti-Corruption Service arrested the head of the migration service department of the Abay region police department, Gulvira Donenbayeva. It was reported that Donenbayeva, via her subordinate, received a bribe of $1,000 for assisting in transferring a district police officer to a municipal migration service unit.
