How sand extraction is destroying the Ilek River in the Aktobe region
The FBK editorial office has received reports from residents of the Aktobe region concerned about the condition of the Ilek River. According to them, new quarries for the extraction of sand and sand-and-gravel mixtures are actively appearing along the floodplain. People fear that interference with the riverbed and floodplain system could have consequences not only for the ecology but also for the region's water supply.

The Ministry of Ecology stated that CCTV cameras to combat illegal dumping have been deemed "impractical", as waste is supposedly stored outside populated areas. In a military unit in Pavlodar, a contract serviceman fired shots from his assigned weapon, resulting in his death at the scene. Another soldier was wounded and is in intensive care in a serious but stable condition. In connection with the incident, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan has opened criminal cases, a pre-trial investigation is underway, and the circumstances of what happened are being established. The progress of the case is being monitored by the Internal Security Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

A BBC investigation has shown that the purchase of Prince Andrew’s former residence in the UK in 2007 may have been partly financed by funds from a company that the Italian prosecutor's office linked to corrupt payments. The buyer was Kazakh billionaire Timur Kulibayev, the son-in-law of the former president of Kazakhstan. Kulibayev himself denies corruption and calls the deal lawful.

Former mayor of Shymkent, Gabidulla Abdrakhimov, has been appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Board for Operations at Samruk-Kazyna Construction JSC and assumed the position on 29 December 2025, the fund's press service reported and several Kazakh media outlets confirmed. However, he is not officially a member of the company's board of directors.

The internal conflict in the MSH committee has escalated into a demand for an official investigation.

The specialised inter-district administrative court of the Abai region considered a lawsuit to protect the rights of a minor pupil who had lost his place on the housing waiting list. The court ruled that the actions of the officials were unlawful and ordered the restoration of his registration on the housing list from 2016. The decision has entered into legal force.
