How sand extraction is destroying the Ilek River in the Aktobe region
The FBK editorial office has received reports from residents of the Aktobe region concerned about the condition of the Ilek River. According to them, new quarries for the extraction of sand and sand-and-gravel mixtures are actively appearing along the floodplain. People fear that interference with the riverbed and floodplain system could have consequences not only for the ecology but also for the region's water supply.

The Ministry of Ecology stated that CCTV cameras to combat illegal dumping have been deemed "impractical", as waste is supposedly stored outside populated areas. In military unit 5573 of the National Guard in Astana, a video surveillance system based on artificial intelligence is being tested. The technology analyses the behaviour and emotional state of service personnel and, when signs of aggression are detected, automatically sends notifications to commanders and specialists. If its effectiveness is confirmed, the system may be deployed in other military units as well.

A man in Astana has been sentenced to three years in prison for using force against police officers.
