The authorities of Kyrgyzstan have put forward for public discussion a draft amendment to the veterinary and sanitary requirements for producers of meat, milk and other products of animal origin. The document provides for strengthened control over the use of antibiotics and the introduction of a product traceability system from farm to sale.
WHAT RULES ARE BEING PROPOSED
According to 24.kg, the draft amendment concerns the prevention of animal diseases and food safety. Producers will be obliged to adhere to the withdrawal periods for antibiotics and other veterinary medicines from animals before slaughter or before obtaining products.
Livestock farmers will also be required to keep records of the use of medicines, transmit data to state authorities through digital systems, and ensure animal identification. The document specifically stipulates product traceability at all stages — from farm to sale.
WHY THE AUTHORITIES DECIDED TO STRENGTHEN CONTROLS
In the explanatory note to the draft, it is stated that over the past three years in Kyrgyzstan, residues of antibiotics and veterinary medicines have been regularly detected in products of animal origin.
In 2025, after more than 47,000 laboratory tests, 166 positive results for the presence of antibiotics and veterinary medicines were recorded. In 2024, 151 such cases were identified, and in 2023, 181.
WHAT WILL CHANGE FOR PRODUCERS
The draft introduces additional sanitary requirements for the keeping of animals, the storage of feed, and the transport of products. Measures to protect products from contamination by bacteria, chemicals and parasites are separately stipulated.
Furthermore, the document provides for a risk-based approach to inspections, strengthened state monitoring, and control over the use of feed and feed additives.

The authorities of Kyrgyzstan believe that the new requirements should reduce the risks of the spread of dangerous diseases and increase the safety of food products.
