250 km of roads are planned to be repaired in Almaty in 2024

This year in Almaty, roads on 274 streets of the city will be repaired. Their total length will be 250 km.

As reported by zakon.kz citing the Almaty akimat, 90% of pothole repairs in the metropolis are on roads where medium-term repairs have not been carried out for more than 5 years. Sections where construction and repair of utility networks were carried out have also been identified as problem areas.

According to the akimat, contractors are filling potholes identified during monitoring and based on residents' appeals, which are received via the @AlmatyJolybot chatbot on Telegram, the open-almaty.kz portal, and the eOtinish service.

"Since the start of the work, current repairs have covered 41,000 square metres of road surface. By the end of the year, it is planned to repair around 310,000 square metres of asphalt concrete pavement. Medium-term repair involves restoring the road's initial operational qualities by replacing the road surface. This year, medium-term repairs are planned for 274 streets with a total length of 250 km", the statement reads.

At the same time, the akimat reminded that last year in Almaty, medium-term road repairs were carried out on 175 streets with a length of 200 km. It is reported that the warranty period for medium-term repairs is 3 years, during which time the contractor undertakes to rectify any shortcomings at their own expense.

"Last year, in a pilot mode, polymer-asphalt concrete was used during repairs on 15 main streets of the city, aimed at increasing resistance to rutting and cracking. Such mixtures are resistant to wear, have a high softening point (65-70°C), therefore they easily withstand heat without significant consequences, and last much longer – 8-10 years instead of the current 5 years of service. This practice will be continued this year", officials from the akimat stated.

Recall, earlier the akimat of Astana said that a number of contracted road construction organisations would be forced to redo work at their own expense. It was reported that defects were discovered during a spring inspection on several streets where repair work had been carried out from 2021 to 2022, specifically during the period when the mayor of the capital was Kulginov.
