Senior police officers have been detained in the Zhambyl region on suspicion of taking a bribe. According to sources from the BRC, the suspects are the head of the regional police department's extremism counteraction unit, police colonel Kanat Nurmagambetov, and his deputy, police colonel Orazaly Kudabayev.
They are suspected of demanding 3 million tenge in exchange for not prosecuting a hooliganism case, an incident which occurred in a mosque in Taraz.
Investigative actions are being carried out against the detainees, and an internal investigation has been initiated by the internal security unit of the Zhambyl regional police department.
It has become known that Nurmagambetov has served in the internal affairs bodies since 1999. He had only been in his leadership position for a few weeks — since 31 July of this year. His deputy, Kudabayev, has worked in the Ministry of Internal Affairs since 2001 and also received his current position at the end of July.
Recall that in May, a sentence was handed down in Almaty in a case concerning the theft of firearms and ammunition by police officers. A senior inspector of the military and special equipment department of the city police department's logistics management, a forensic expert from the department, and a driver from the same department systematically removed and sold weapons that were due to be destroyed.
