Employees of the organised crime division of the Karaganda region have detained a lawyer from Kazakhmys Corporation LLP, Azat Zhumabayev.
According to the press service of Kazakhmys, he is suspected of extortion.
"With the involvement of workers from the Security Directorate of Kazakhmys Corporation LLP, the head of the contract and claims department of the legal management for the Central Region of the legal service department of Kazakhmys Corporation LLP, Zhumabayev Azat Maksutovich, was detained on suspicion of committing a criminal offence under Part 1 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 'Extortion,'" the statement reads.
It should be noted that cases of injury in the divisions of Kazakhmys Corporation have been increasingly reported recently. In just two months of last year, 4 people died in the company's mines.
For context, in November 2023, a mining foreman died in the company's mine while carrying out work.
In the same month, at the Zhaissan mine in the Zhambyl region, also owned by Kazakhmys, two specialists died during mining operations.
A month later, in December, a worker died again in a company mine in the Ulytau region. The tragedy occurred at the Zhylandy mine.
