The former head of the sports department of the Atyrau region has been convicted of bribery and embezzlement.

In Court No.2 of Atyrau, a verdict was passed on the former head of the regional department of physical culture and sports, Dastanbek Kospanov.

According to the press service of Anti-Corruption, he was found guilty of accepting a bribe in the amount of 1.7 million tenge from the senior coach of the State Institution «Olympic Reserve Training Centre», N. Mailashev. The bribe was intended for assistance in attending training camps at the expense of budget funds.

Kospanov was also accused of abusing his official powers by illegally collecting money from coaches of the State Institution totalling 2.4 million tenge.

Furthermore, the head of the department was found guilty of embezzling 1.1 million tenge by unlawfully calculating salaries for people who did not work in the state institution.

As a result, the court sentenced Kospanov to 4 years in prison, and Mailashev to 3 years' imprisonment. At the same time, the convicts were banned for life from holding positions in the civil service, as judges, and in local self-government bodies.
