The Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek found the former President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Almazbek Atambayev, guilty in the case regarding the events in the village of Koi-Tash in August 2019. He was sentenced in absentia to 11 years and 6 months of imprisonment with confiscation of property, and was also stripped of his state awards.
According to AKIpress, the court also passed sentences on a number of other defendants in the case, including former deputies and civil servants.
The trial concerned their involvement in the mass unrest that began after the attempt to detain Atambayev at his residence in the village of Koi-Tash. Thus, the defendants in the Koi-Tash events case were sentenced as follows:
- former head of the presidential administration Farid Niyazov to 7 years and 8 months of imprisonment;
- former deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh (JK) – the parliament of the Kyrgyz Republic Ravshan Jeenbekov to 7 years and 8 months of imprisonment;
- former deputy of the JK KR Irina Karamushkina to 7 years and 6 months of imprisonment;
- former deputy of the JK KR Asel Koduranova to 3 years of probation;
- former deputy Meerbek Miskenbaev to 5 years of probation;
- former employee of the 9th Service of the SCNS (State Protection Service) and former bodyguard of Atambayev Kanat Sagymbaev to 5 years of probation;
- journalist and Atambayev supporter Kunduz Zholdubaeva to 5 years of probation;
- Atambayev supporter Farkhad Baabiev to 5 years and 6 months of imprisonment;
- Kanatbek Oskonaliev to 5 years of probation;
- Karypbek uulu Ryspek to 5 years of probation;
- Amangeldy Kakebaev to 3 years of probation;
- Marat Shamenov to 3 years of probation;
- Nooruz Kaparbek uulu to 3 years of probation.
As previously reported, on the evening of 7 August 2019, a special operation to detain the former head of state took place in the village of Koi-Tash, located near Bishkek. Shots were fired at his home, resulting in dozens of people being injured. According to the Kyrgyz Ministry of Health, 45 victims with various injuries were taken to hospitals in Bishkek and the Chuy region.
On 8 August 2019, the President of Kyrgyzstan, Sooronbai Jeenbekov, stated at a Security Council meeting that Atambayev had "grossly violated the Constitution and laws" and had offered armed resistance to investigative actions.
On the same day, law enforcement agencies detained Atambayev. On 9 August, the court chose a preventive measure for him — remand in custody. According to available information, in connection with the events of 7–8 August 2019, at least eight criminal cases were opened against his associates. According to some media reports, Atambayev may now be hiding in Dubai (UAE).
