In Almaty, the appellate court reviewed the case against the former deputy head of the Department for Economic Investigations (DEI) for the Kyzylorda region Almas Kasymbayev. In 2022, he was sentenced to 8 years' imprisonment, but the sentence was later overturned.

According to the press service of Anticor, alongside him in the dock was businessman Zhanat Sakenov.

"They have been found guilty of attempted fraud and inciting the director of one of the enterprises in Almaty to bribe law enforcement officers with 10 million tenge to have a criminal case dropped", the statement said.

As a result, the court sentenced Kasymbayev and Sakenov to 7 years' imprisonment each, with a lifetime ban from holding positions in state bodies and quasi-public sector entities.

Recall that in 2022, it was reported that Kasymbayev was sentenced to 8 years, and Sakenov to 7 years' imprisonment. It also emerged then that in March 2020, Sakenov had offered businessman Dmitry Ponomaryov to give a bribe of 10 million tenge to Kasymbayev to resolve issues with his limited liability partnership - to lift a freeze on accounts, and return seized accounting documents and the company seal.

Ponomaryov, who himself is a figure in a criminal case handled by the DEI of another region, decided to report the 'helpers'' initiative to the relevant authorities.
