Former akim of Satpayev Shapagat Aubakir, who was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for bribery, attempted to appeal the verdict.

According to the court of the Ulytau region, his appeal was considered by the appellate panel.

"By the ruling of the appellate judicial panel of the regional court, the verdict was left unchanged, the appeals of the convicted man, his defence lawyer, and the prosecutor's appellate motion were dismissed", the statement reads.

It is reported that in February 2024, the convicted man, while serving as akim of the city, accepted a bribe of 10 million tenge from an entrepreneur carrying out road maintenance work in Satpayev. The bribe was intended for providing assistance in increasing the amount of a government procurement contract.

As a result, the court sentenced Shapagat Aubakir to 3 years and 6 months in prison with a lifetime ban from holding positions in the civil service. The entrepreneur was fined an amount equal to 20 times the value of the bribe, that is, 200 million tenge.

Incidentally, it was previously reported that after the arrest of the former akim, residents of Satpayev called for a petition to be created in defence of Shapagat Aubakir. Furthermore, some residents of Satpayev even collected money for his lawyer.
