A verdict was handed down in a specialised inter-district criminal court regarding the criminal case against Kuandyk Bishimbayev and Bakhytzhan Baizhanov.
The court found Kuandyk Bishimbayev guilty under Article 110 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Torture" and Article 99 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Murder", sentencing him to 24 years in prison. He will serve his sentence in a maximum-security institution.
His brother, Bakhytzhan Baizhanov, was sentenced to 4 years in a medium-security colony. The jury found Kuandyk Bishimbayev guilty of the brutal murder and torture of Saltanat Nukenova, and Baizhanov guilty of harbouring a criminal.
The judge, Aizhan Kulbayeva, also announced what financial compensation would be recovered from Kuandyk Bishimbayev and his brother.
"Recover from Bishimbayev in favour of the state court costs for conducting forensic examinations in the amount of 2 million 306 thousand 382 tenge, and from Baizhanov in the amount of 3,324 tenge. Recover from Bishimbayev in favour of the victim's compensation fund a compulsory payment in the amount of 30 MRP (Monthly Calculation Index), totalling 103,500 tenge. From Baizhanov – in the amount of 20 MRP, 69 thousand tenge", the judge stated.
