The specialised inter-district criminal court of Aktobe has found two employees of the Department of Economic Investigations (DEI) guilty of attempted bribery and mediation. One of the convicted men received 10 years in prison, the second received two years.
WHAT THE COURT ESTABLISHED
According to the newspaper "Diapazon", the defendants were former senior DEI investigator Yermek Makhambetov and deputy head of the second operational department of the DEI Daulet Sarin.
According to the indictment, Makhambetov was handling a criminal case against a representative of a consumer cooperative on charges related to a financial pyramid scheme. The prosecution alleged that the investigator demanded 50 million tenge from the defendant in the case, promising in return to drop the criminal prosecution.
HOW THE EVENTS UNFOLDED
Daulet Sarin was brought in to facilitate the transfer of the money, and according to the investigation, he agreed to act as an intermediary.
The representative of the consumer cooperative contacted the National Security Committee (NSC). After this, Sarin was detained while receiving the funds in foreign currency.
It is noted that almost all of the transferred amount was a dummy. Makhambetov was also detained later.
WHAT DECISION THE COURT RENDERED
The court found Yermek Makhambetov guilty of attempted bribery and sentenced him to 10 years in prison. Daulet Sarin was found guilty of mediation and received 2 years in prison.
In addition, both convicts are banned from working in the civil service for life.
