The environmental prosecutor's office of the Almaty region has initiated criminal cases regarding the organisation of an illegal landfill in the Irgely rural district of the Karasai district.

According to Vlast.kz, residents of the village of Koksay in the Irgely rural district have been fighting for years against an unauthorised landfill located near their homes. Local residents complain of a constant unpleasant smell and regular fires of rubbish brought there from various parts of Almaty.

The rural district's administration said that 7 land plots used for the landfill originally had a designated purpose 'for running a peasant farm'. Local authorities ordered their owners to fill the areas with construction waste and soil.

"To date, the environmental prosecutor's office of the Almaty region has initiated criminal cases against the land users for causing harm to the environment", said the administration of the Irgely district.

In turn, the administration of the Almaty region stated that the landfill actually covers 12 land plots.

In September, a special commission including law enforcement officers, representatives of local authorities and the regional ecology department conducted an inspection. Based on its findings, the administration of the Irgely rural district was instructed to identify the owners of the plots and bring them to administrative responsibility.

"If the use of land plots for purposes other than their intended use is detected, in accordance with the legislation, measures may be taken to return them to state ownership", stated the administration of the Almaty region.

It is not reported what measures will be taken against the rural district's administration.

Recall that earlier it was reported that in the Irgely rural district of the Karasai district of the Almaty region, 25 thousand residents of the residential complex 'Asyl Arman' were left without electricity.
