An employee of one of the banks in the Tashkent region of Uzbekistan was detained while receiving $100,000 of the demanded $4.25 million for the registration of land plots. A criminal case has been opened against the man.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE CASE
According to Gazeta.uz, citing the State Security Service (SSS) of Uzbekistan, the head of the department for work with mahallas and state programmes of the regional centre of one of the leading banks has been detained.
According to the agency, the employee demanded $4.25 million (around 2 billion tenge) from the buyer for the sale of a plot of 16.05 hectares and the registration, through acquaintances among officials, of a further 4 hectares of land.
HOW THE LAND PLOTS ARE CONNECTED
The plot of 16.05 hectares was sold in 2024 to the employee's father at an electronic online auction with the right of lease for use for livestock purposes. The land was on the books of the khokimiyat of the Kuyichirchik district of Uzbekistan.
A further 4 hectares of land, according to the SSS report, were in the khokimiyat's reserve.
HOW THE DETENTION TOOK PLACE
The operation was carried out by officers of the SSS directorate for the Tashkent region together with the department for combating economic crimes under the Prosecutor General's Office of Uzbekistan.
The man was detained while receiving $100,000 (around 45 million tenge) — part of the sum that, according to the agency, he demanded from the buyer. The SSS noted that physical evidence was recorded during the detention.
AT WHAT STAGE IS THE CASE
A criminal case has been opened against the suspect. Investigative proceedings are currently under way.
