Residents of the city of Aktau report ongoing problems with the drainage system, which they say is not working properly. People claim the situation has persisted for a long time and remains unresolved, despite local authorities being aware of it.
WHAT HAPPENED
According to residents, the city's drainage system is operating intermittently or not at all, reports the Telegram channel ‘LETTERS TO THE PRESIDENT’.
Residents claim the problem is not temporary but protracted. They say it has been known about for a long time, yet no significant measures have been taken to address it.
FINANCIAL IRREGULARITIES IN THE DRAINAGE SECTOR
In March 2026, the prosecutor's office identified violations in the operations of the enterprise ‘Kaspiy zhylu, su arnasy’ (KZhSA), which provides drainage services in Aktau. According to the supervisory authority, the company failed to implement the tariff estimate totalling 30 million tenge, which led to a tariff review. As a result, the cost of drainage services was reduced by 3%.
Furthermore, the enterprise was held administratively liable and fined 3.4 million tenge.
THE WIDESPREAD PROBLEM OF AGED INFRASTRUCTURE
Drainage systems in Kazakhstan are characterised by a high level of wear and tear — on average over 50%. In many cities, sewerage facilities have been in operation for more than 50 years, affecting their technical condition and operational stability.
According to Kuandyk Kazhkenov, Deputy Minister of Industry and Construction, around 1.9 trillion tenge is required to modernise the country's water supply and drainage systems.
