Court No. 2 of Atyrau City has replaced the prison sentence of former deputy regional governor Bakytgul Khamenova with a restriction of liberty. The decision was made after the end of a three-year suspension of the sentence in the bribery case.
CASE DETAILS
On 16 March 2026, Court No. 2 of Atyrau City considered the probation service's submission to replace the unserved part of Bakytgul Khamenova's sentence.
The suspension of the sentence was in effect until 10 March 2026 and was granted due to her having a young child, reports the newspaper 'Ak Zhaiyk'.
According to the probation service, during the suspension period Khamenova did not breach public order, was not held administratively liable, and fulfilled her duties in raising the child.
BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
On 15 November 2022 Khamenova was found guilty under paragraph 2 of part 3 of Article 366 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan ('Receiving a bribe') and sentenced to 7 years imprisonment.
According to the case materials, it involved a bribe of 4.5 million tenge, received during the implementation of the project to install a monument to Abai. The court also stripped her of the right to hold positions in the civil service and ordered the confiscation of property.
In October 2025, the convict was spotted at a wedding among officials in the city of Atyrau.
