In the East Kazakhstan Region (EKR), two heads of state bodies have been detained on suspicion of corruption offences. This refers to the head of the Department of Passenger Transport and Highways and the head of the Department for Quality Assurance in Education. According to the National Security Committee (NSC), both officials have been taken into custody by court order.
SUSPICIONS IN THE TRANSPORT SECTOR
As reported by the press service of the NSC of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the head of the Department of Passenger Transport and Highways of the East Kazakhstan Region is under investigation.
According to the investigation, he is suspected of accepting a bribe and abusing his official powers. It has been established that the official received illegal rewards from representatives of road construction companies and bus depots. The total amount of such rewards came to 134 million tenge. Other details of possible incidents are not specified in the materials.
SEIZURE OF FUNDS DURING A SEARCH
During a search at the suspect's place of residence, officers of the NSC seized 121.9 million tenge and 97.7 thousand US dollars. The committee did not clarify whether these funds are considered the subject or evidence in the criminal case — this issue is being determined as part of the investigative actions.
CASE IN THE EDUCATION SYSTEM
Simultaneously, a criminal case has been opened against the head of the Department for Quality Assurance in Education of the East Kazakhstan Region.
According to the investigation, he systematically received money for facilitating teachers' state certification processes. The specific amounts, as well as the period of the alleged actions, are not disclosed in the NSC statement.
By court order, both suspects have been taken into custody.
The National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan emphasised that no further information is subject to disclosure in accordance with Article 201 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
