As transport workers tried to misinform the FBRK editorial team after the publication about Bulatbekov

Submitted by Вера Александрова on

After publishing the material on corruption in the transport sector, the FBRK editorial team faced a massive pressure campaign

Dozens of identical comments appeared defending the subjects, and materials aimed at discrediting the complainant Nursultan Bulatbekov were submitted to the anonymous bot. Verification of the data revealed signs of possible fabrication, and the persistence of the anonymous source and their manipulative tactics raised questions about an organised campaign.

CONTEXT

A few weeks ago, FBRK published material on corruption schemes within the capital's transport control structures based on a statement from Nursultan Bulatbekov. The editorial team presented the facts without value judgments: Bulatbekov submitted a statement with specific allegations to the law enforcement authorities.

Important detail: the editorial team is running a series of publications on this topic. In previous materials, we objectively wrote both about disciplinary actions against Bulatbekov himself, and about a systemic problem: internal investigations in Kazakhstan often serve not to establish the truth, but to protect management and discredit complainants.

ORGANISED RESPONSE

After the publication, dozens of identical comments appeared in the comment sections: praising the subjects using similar phrasing, accusations of a commissioned article, and demands to hold the journalists accountable. Characteristically, no one disputed the specific facts from the statement, instead focusing on discrediting the source.

It is unclear whether these were bots or real employees who were obliged to leave reviews. However, the synchronicity and coordination of the comments give the impression of an organised campaign.

DUBIOUS EVIDENCE

At the same time, materials were submitted to the anonymous bot: a video and a handwritten explanatory note supposedly from Bulatbekov. The video turned out to be an unauthorised recording of a telephone conversation without video footage — it is impossible to identify the interlocutors or verify its authenticity.

The explanatory note raised even more questions. The anonymous source claimed that in it, Bulatbekov "confesses to his actions". However, upon reading, it is clear: the author describes actions taken under pressure from management and does not admit culpability. There are no guarantees of the document's authenticity — imitating a handwritten note is not difficult.

When the editorial team did not react to the submitted materials, the anonymous source began threatening to pass the information to other media outlets and accused the editorial team of publishing unverified information; however, no other publication ultimately published these materials.

CONCLUSIONS

Massive attacks in the comments using similar phrasing, dubious "evidence," and the persistence of an anonymous source — these are signs of an organised campaign to pressure the editorial team.

Journalistic ethics require the verification of any information. Anonymous sources are valuable, but only when the information provided can be independently verified. The FBRK editorial team will continue to report on corruption schemes, relying on verified facts and not yielding to pressure.

If the pressure on the editorial team continues, we will be forced to contact the law enforcement authorities.
