Threat of strike: Astana airport drivers demand a pay rise

Submitted by Вера Александрова on

Astana airport employees are threatening to strike if their wages are not increased.

"How many drivers have to die for you to raise our salaries? I am speaking on behalf of all of us, as we do the same job. Have we ever let you down? Have we failed in the screening?" – a representative of the airport workers addressed.

According to media reports, aviation expert Abul Kekilbayev published a video of a meeting between airport employees and representatives from either the airport management or the Civil Aviation Committee. In response, the airport's press service stated that the meeting did not take place inside the airport building.

The man claims that 250 drivers are demanding a pay rise. It has emerged that they currently receive 250,000 tenge. According to them, this is not enough. Accommodation alone costs them 170,000 tenge per month.

The airport workers are also complaining about the condition of the equipment. Part of it is practically unfit for use, they say. At the same time, they recalled deaths in the workplace. For example, last year there were reports of the death of a baggage conveyor belt driver while on duty.

The airport employees have stated that they will not come to work if the issue of a pay rise is not resolved before 9 May.
