Drivers in the Almaty Region have complained about the large number of fines issued following the automatic detection of traffic violations. One motorist reported 14 fines in a single day, while another said they had received four notices in a week totalling around 50,000 tenge.
WHAT DRIVERS REPORTED
As reported by Nege.kz, the issue was publicly raised by an Almaty resident, Rishat Askarbekuly. According to him, several drivers, including those working on the Almaty – Taraz route, have been hit with an unexpectedly large number of fines.
The driver himself received four fines over the past week. He paid the first notices in order to take advantage of the 50% discount, but after receiving the latest fine, he noticed discrepancies in the data listed on the notice.
QUESTIONS RAISED ABOUT THE FINES
According to Rishat Askarbekuly, the speed limits on the highway are 70 and 110 km/h, yet one of the notices listed a speed of 97 km/h. He also highlighted a mismatch between the recorded time of the violation and the camera image: the notice stated the offence occurred at 8:00, yet the photograph appears to have been taken in the dark.
He said that over the course of a week he received four fines totalling around 50,000 tenge. Meanwhile, he added that among other drivers, some had received between four and five notices, and one motorist reported 14 fines in a single day.
WHAT THE POLICE SAID
The Police Department of the Almaty Region said that an investigation is underway in response to the complaints. The department clarified that traffic violations are recorded automatically by cameras, without the involvement of police officers.
The police intend to make a decision once the investigation is complete.
