The Anti-Corruption Service of the Zhambyl Region is conducting a pre-trial investigation into a specialist at the “Taraz - CTO” customs post and a businessman from Shymkent on charges of bribery.

According to the press service of the agency, the customs officer is suspected of receiving a bribe of over $16,000 from the businessman.

The bribe was intended for processing transit declarations without the actual arrival of freight vehicles into the country.

By court order, the customs post specialist was placed under house arrest, while the businessman fled during the investigation and was placed on the international wanted list.

He was later detained in the Kyrgyz Republic and remanded in custody in a detention centre in Bishkek. The relevant authorities are currently taking steps to secure his extradition. The investigation is ongoing.

It may be recalled that in August, a sentence was handed down in Astana to the deputy head of a customs post at the capital’s international airport. She was accused of accepting a bribe from a woman who had been convicted of importing undeclared medical supplies and gold items valued at 57 million tenge.
