Kazakhstan is developing a unified biometric identification system

Submitted by Вера Александрова on

A centralised national remote biometric identification system will be created in Kazakhstan, designed to make it easier for citizens to access government services and use banking services. This was announced by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov in response to a parliamentary request.

The system involves recognising people by their face, fingerprints, iris, and so on. It is reported that the project will be handled by the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry, and the launch will be carried out jointly by JSC "National Information Technologies" and LLP "BTS Digital"

As some media outlets report, the main goal of the system is to ensure the security of citizens' biometric data. And in particular, the security of children's biometrics.

"To enable access to children's biometrics, the issue of providing consent from the legal representatives of minors for access to their personal data within the framework of the national system, in compliance with security requirements, is being worked out," said Olzhas Bektenov.

It will be recalled that the topic of digital security was recently raised by Majilisman Yekaterina Smyshlyaeva in a parliamentary request, insisting on the need to ensure the security of state biometric databases.

"Biometric data has the highest level of accuracy. However, it is important to understand that you can easily change the PIN code on a card, and if necessary, change your document details. But changing your face or fingerprint is almost impossible. A leak of biometric data can cause irreparable damage to a person's digital identity. Digital fraudsters are after biometrics; it is this data, processed by AI, that is used to deceive banking systems," noted Ms Smyshlyaeva.

It will be recalled that recently, IT industry expert Arman Abdrasilov spoke about certain vulnerabilities in the Egov Mobile app.

In particular, government services in the mobile app can be obtained using Face ID. However, according to the expert, when providing services via Face ID, the app does not compare the recipient's face with the Ministry of Justice database, but instead cross-references it with a local database of faces - Know Your Client (KYC).
