The media report that the former head of the National Security Committee, Karim Massimov, who was convicted of high treason and an attempted seizure of power, has submitted a petition for clemency

Currently, based on a decision by the Anti-Corruption Agency, Massimov is being held in the National Security Committee's pre-trial detention facility in Astana. The National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan told journalists at Informburo.kz that in March he sent a petition for clemency addressed to the President.

The National Security Committee added that a pre-trial investigation continues against Massimov under Article 218, Part 3, Paragraph 3 (‘Legalisation (laundering) of money and other property obtained by criminal means’) and Article 366, Part 4 (‘Receiving a bribe on an especially large scale’) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

For context, in April 2023, Karim Massimov was sentenced to 18 years in prison for high treason, attempted violent seizure of power, abuse of power and exceeding official authority. His former deputies, Anuar Sadykulov, Daulet Yergozhin and Marat Osipov, were sentenced to terms ranging from 3 to 16 years in prison.
