President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev approved the decision of a special commission, which refused to pardon the convicted former chairman of the National Security Committee Karim Massimov.
On 27 June, the Presidential Pardon Commission considered Massimov's petition and refused it.
“Following the examination of the possibility of applying a pardon act to Massimov, the commission submitted a corresponding proposal to the head of state, with which he agreed”, the Presidential Administration reported.
According to Informburo.kz, the decision of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has already been communicated to the author of the petition.
Recall that in April 2023, Karim Massimov was sentenced to 18 years in prison for high treason, an attempted violent seizure of power, abuse of power, and exceeding official authority. In March of this year, he submitted a pardon petition to the President.
In June, Majilis deputy Yermurat Bapi expressed the opinion that Massimov should come clean to society, the authorities, and the judicial bodies, and also set out the entire chain of January events and name the main organiser. According to the Majilisman, this could help the former chairman of the National Security Committee to go free.
