A man convicted of murdering his wife, Kuandyk Bishimbayev, has filed a lawsuit against the prison administration. He complained that he is not being encouraged for participating in various activities.

According to ORDA, the inmate came first in a prison chess tournament and gave a talk to other convicts about the life of Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev at an event marking his 100th birthday.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs' Committee of the Penal Enforcement System (CPES) stated that convicts do not receive incentives if they violate the order of serving their sentence. The CPES noted that Bishimbayev already has one violation on record, but did not specify what it was.

The court, in turn, dismissed the convict's claim, noting that Bishimbayev's demands do not fall under administrative court proceedings.

For context, in November 2023, Kuandyk Bishimbayev's wife, Saltanat Nukenova, died from bodily injuries sustained at a restaurant in the capital.

Bishimbayev was later arrested on suspicion of murder. He was held for two months. Bishimbayev's relative, Bakhytzhan Baizhanov, the director of the 'Gastro-centre' where the murder took place, was also taken into custody. He was charged with covering up the crime.

Ultimately, the court found Bishimbayev guilty and sentenced him to 24 years in prison. Baizhanov was given a sentence of 4 years in prison in a medium-security penal institution.
