In Shymkent, authorities have taken control of the situation on the Badam river after damage to 40 metres of a concrete dam. The Akimat reports that the destruction occurred due to illegal gravel extraction by unknown individuals. Repair of the dam will be carried out at the expense of the contractor who carried out the reconstruction of the banks last year.

HOW THE RECONSTRUCTION WAS CARRIED OUT

Reconstruction of the Badam river bank was completed in December 2025: the contractor repaired 5.3 km of banks, receiving 2.7 billion tenge for the work. Despite the recently completed work, the actions of unknown individuals led to the destruction of part of the dam, reports Vera.kz.

WHICH SETTLEMENTS ARE AT RISK

The erosion of 40 metres of the concrete dam has put several settlements at risk, including Igilik, Zhanatalap and Kokbulak.

THE AUTHORITIES' RESPONSE

Law enforcement agencies are conducting an investigation into the illegal gravel extraction. The identities of those involved are being established.

The Akimat stressed that the warranty period for the completed work is seven years, so all repairs will be carried out at the expense of the contractor.
