In the village of Zhanasaz, Baizak District, Zhambyl Region, streets and courtyards were flooded following heavy rainfall. However, residents and authorities gave different estimates of the water level.
WHAT HAPPENED
On 6 April residents reported significant flooding, according to Hronika.kz. In a video circulated online, it was claimed that the water level reached about half a metre, and that streets and courtyards were completely submerged.
As seen in the footage, water was coming from the fields and spreading across the streets, covering the asphalt and the approaches to houses. The author of the video linked the incident to the fact that irrigation ditches had previously been filled in during gas and water supply works.
WHAT THE AKIMAT SAID
The Akimat of Baizak District denied reports of significant flooding. It stated that the water had risen only 10–15 centimetres, not half a metre as claimed in the video.
According to official data, the flooding affected the yards of three residential houses on Akterek Street in the Sazterek Rural District. Heavy rain was cited as the cause.
The Akimat also reported that emergency services arrived promptly, after which the water was diverted into the drainage system and the situation was stabilised.
Furthermore, five days before the incident, the Akim of Zhambyl Region, Yerbol Karashukeyev, chaired a meeting on preparations for the 2026 flood season.
At that meeting, it was noted that heavy rainfall was expected in the near future. The regional head ordered the cleaning of irrigation ditches and stressed the need to be prepared for possible flooding. The press service of the Akim also reminded that floods had already been recorded in the region the previous year.
CONTEXT
These incidents occur against the backdrop of other flood events in the country.
Earlier, a dam breach occurred near the village of Sabindy at the Shopytykol Dam in Akmola Region.
Particular attention is drawn to the fact that, according to data from the Pavlov Analytical Centre, this area had previously been identified as a high-risk zone for flooding. On an interactive flood forecast map dated 3 April, the area around Sabindy was visually highlighted as potentially vulnerable.
