Steppe fires have engulfed four districts of the Karaganda region.

Steppe fires have been recorded in the Shet, Aktogay, Bukhar-Zhyrau and Karkaraly districts of the Karaganda region. In the Karkaraly district, two people have suffered burns and are in hospital. No threat has been identified to settlements near the village of Zhanatogan.

WHAT FORCES HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED

According to the Department for Emergency Situations (DES) of the Karaganda region, 620 personnel and 134 units of equipment have been sent to contain and extinguish the fires, as well as to protect settlements. The situation is being continuously monitored in the region.

The situation is complicated by strong winds. An operational headquarters has been set up at the DES to coordinate efforts.

WHAT IS HAPPENING NEAR ZHANATOGAN

An aerial inspection has been carried out near the village of Zhanatogan in the Karkaraly district. No new sources of fire were found, and there is no threat to settlements.

According to district authorities, two groups are working there. 159 people and 52 units of equipment have been involved in firefighting. Three fires near wintering sites in the area of the village of Besoba have also been extinguished.

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE CASUALTIES

In the Karkaraly district, two men, born in 1989 and 1970, sought medical assistance. One sustained burns to 10% of his body, the second to 20%.

Both casualties are in hospital. Their condition is assessed as stable.

WHAT IS THE SITUATION IN OTHER DISTRICTS

In the Aktogay and Shet districts, the situation remains stable and under control. Natural fires there have been extinguished.

Akim of the Karaganda region Yermaganbet Bulekpaev noted that the danger of steppe fires persists due to the hot weather and strong winds.
