On certain sections of roads in Kazakhstan, a video analytics system incorporating elements of artificial intelligence (AI) is being tested. The cameras are designed to monitor road conditions and transmit data in real time.
WHERE THE TESTING IS TAKING PLACE
According to JSC "NC "KazAvtoZhol", the system is being introduced as part of the digitalisation of the road industry. The pilot project is being tested on the toll section "Almaty – Konayev", where the operation of the equipment and autonomous infrastructure is being checked.
At the same time, on the "Astana – Temirtau" section, which is 134 km long, supports are being installed and preparations are underway for the mounting of cameras, solar panels, wind turbines and data transmission equipment. Preparatory work is also being carried out on the "Astana – Shchuchinsk" section, where communication infrastructure and foundations for placing equipment are being created.
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS
As the company reported, a key feature of the system is its ability to operate autonomously on remote sections of roads where the necessary infrastructure is absent.
To achieve this, the cameras are equipped with solar panels and wind turbines. It is expected that the equipment will be able to obtain energy from the sun and wind, transmit data, and analyse road conditions in real time.
WHAT FUNCTIONS ARE PROVIDED
According to the project description, the video analytics system with AI elements can identify potentially dangerous situations on the road. Specifically, this refers to the appearance of pedestrians or animals on the carriageway, driving in the opposite lane or in reverse, as well as parking violations.
In addition, the system provides for the recognition of state registration plates, as well as the make and colour of vehicles.
WHY THE PROJECT IS BEING IMPLEMENTED
The project aims to develop an intelligent road monitoring system. It is anticipated that such devices could be used for the automatic detection of potentially dangerous situations and for transmitting information to road services.
It is also noted that, in the future, the equipment is planned to be integrated into a unified monitoring system for republican roads.
