She said that the $3,400 was practically all the money the couple had taken with them after relocating.

WHAT THE PASSENGERS ARE TRYING TO ESTABLISH

The couple stated that they are trying to reconstruct the sequence of events. The woman stressed that she does not yet know where and by whom the swap could have been made, so she is not accusing any specific people.

Instead of dollars, according to her, the envelope contained a stack of Malawian banknotes in denominations of 2,000 kwacha (around 513 tenge).

WHAT AIR ASTANA RESPONDED

Air Astana said that investigating cases of possible theft of baggage contents falls within the competence of law enforcement agencies. Passengers were advised to file an official report with the police.

The airline also noted that if the alleged crime occurred outside Kazakhstan, the place of its commission cannot be established, or the events took place in different locations, the question of where the case is to be heard is determined in accordance with established rules.
