A sentence has been handed down in Almaty to two police officers who were found guilty of using torture.
According to the city prosecutor's office, in March 2023 the police officers tortured a local resident in an attempt to extract a confession from him for a theft. It is reported that the incident took place in the apartment of a relative of one of the law enforcement officers.
"As a result of the unlawful actions of the police officers, the victim suffered physical pain", the statement noted.
The court sentenced the police officers to 3 years and 6 months of suspended imprisonment with probation supervision. The convicted men were stripped of their ranks and the right to work in public service.
At the same time, it was noted that, upon the prosecutor's office's request, 10 police officers, including 5 heads of structural units, were brought to disciplinary responsibility for insufficient control over the work of their subordinates and improper performance of their official duties.
Recall that last August in the Ulytau region, military personnel and employees of the Committee of the Penal Enforcement System (KUIS) were convicted for using torture. The head of the institution and his deputy were each sentenced to 6.6 years in prison. Five employees of the institution and four military personnel received sentences ranging from 4 to 4.5 years in prison.
In October, a sentence was handed down in Karaganda to a senior detective of the Department of the Penal Enforcement System (DUIS) for the Karaganda and Ulytau regions for torturing a convict.
