In the regional perinatal centre in Kyzylorda, a woman was given a blood transfusion from 12 donors after giving birth, and a month later the patient was found to have HIV.
According to ORDA, medics notified the Ministry of Health and recorded the incident in a report.
They say that despite this, no action was taken. Moreover, medical staff were allegedly instructed not to disclose the information to the media, and the patient was offered compensation.
It is noted that journalists obtained a certificate from the regional perinatal centre regarding the infection of the new mother with HIV, which had been sent to the Chief Sanitary Doctor of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Sarkhat Beisenova.
The Minister of Health, Akmara Alnazarova, commented on the situation. She stated that an investigation is currently underway into the infection.
"This case is being monitored by the Ministry of Health. An investigation is currently underway, and appropriate measures will be taken based on its findings," said the minister.
It will be recalled that in the summer of 2023, the Centre for AIDS Prevention and Control identified three patients with a positive HIV status who had been treated at the Central City Clinical Hospital (CCCH) in Almaty.
Following the investigation, specialists concluded that the infection of the CCCH patients occurred due to medical staff violating standards for invasive procedures and a lack of oversight of their work.
In February 2024, after the investigation was completed, the head of the CCCH and his deputy were dismissed. Two nurses were subjected to disciplinary action.
