The inter-district criminal court of Shymkent has passed a sentence on the deputy head of the city's housing department and a private entrepreneur.

According to Zakon.kz, the official was accused of embezzling budget funds as part of a group of persons by prior conspiracy, as well as legalising criminally obtained money.

The entrepreneur was also accused of embezzling budget funds as part of a group of persons by prior conspiracy.

The investigation established that in 2023, the deputy head of the housing department embezzled more than 367 million tenge, which had been allocated for the repair of multi-storey residential buildings and their seismic resistance surveys.

The entrepreneur, meanwhile, channelled the money through a shell company. The official attempted to legalise the stolen funds by building a bathhouse complex and registering it in his parents' name.

The court found the deputy head guilty and sentenced him to 9 years in prison with confiscation of property. The entrepreneur was sentenced to 8 years in prison

As a reminder, in February, during a meeting at the Shymkent akimat, the anti-corruption service detained the deputy head of the city's housing department.

Officers from the Anti-Corruption Agency entered the office where the meeting was taking place and stated that the agency had questions for one of the officials. With the consent of the city's mayor, Gabit Syzdybekov, the anti-corruption officers removed him.
