What are the residents of the Karaganda region being poisoned with

Submitted by Вера Александрова on

The FBRC editorial team continues its series on which preparations are used for treatment to protect against leaf-eating and sucking pests in the regions of Kazakhstan, and what impact they may have on living organisms, including humans.

We have previously written about what is still being used to poison residents of Astana, Uralsk, Atyrau, as well as the East Kazakhstan, Pavlodar and Kyzylorda regions. In this part, we will tell you which preparations are used in the territory of the Karaganda Region.

According to the Department of Housing and Communal Services of the city of Priozersk, treatment of green spaces in the city is carried out with the preparation «Karate Zeon», the active substance of which is «Lambda-cyhalothrin».

  • «Lambda-cyhalothrin» irritates mucous membranes, negatively affects the human cardiovascular system and can lead to pulmonary oedema. The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms, causing long-term changes in the aquatic environment. «Lambda-cyhalothrin» is lethal to bumblebees, bees and other pollinating insects.

According to the list of pesticides permitted for sale and use in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the preparation «Karate Zeon» is allowed for use in treating agricultural crops and areas infested with locusts.

As reported by the akimat of the city of Shakhtinsk, disinsection measures are carried out in squares, parks, and on water bodies of the city and adjacent settlements. The preparation used in the treatment is «Dimigran», which contains the substances «Chlorpyrifos» and «Cypermethrin», the harmful effects of which we have written about repeatedly before.

To remind you:

  • «Chlorpyrifos» increases the likelihood of giving birth to children with autism, causes weight loss in early childhood, and impairments to cognitive and physical abilities. When affecting an adult, it has a devastating effect on the human cardiovascular, respiratory, and central nervous systems.

  • «Cypermethrin» has a toxic effect on the male reproductive system, contributes to an increase in bone marrow micronuclei and the emergence of suicidal tendencies. The substance negatively affects the central nervous system of mammals and is extremely toxic to cats, fish, bees, and aquatic insects.

According to the Department of Housing and Communal Services of the city of Saran, disinsection on water bodies and open areas of the city is carried out with the preparation «Agran», which also contains the substances «Chlorpyrifos» and «Cypermethrin».

It is worth noting that the preparations «Dimigran» and «Agran» are not included in the list of pesticides permitted for sale and use in the Republic of Kazakhstan. According to the list, pesticides not included in the list are prohibited from import, sale, production, use, and advertising in our country.

The akimat of the Osakarovka District of the Karaganda Region reported that to protect green spaces from insects in the district, they carry out whitewashing of tree trunks with a lime solution. Meanwhile, against mosquitoes and other forms of biting flies, disinsection is carried out on water bodies in spring with the preparations «Agran» and «Averfos».

The active substance of the preparation «Averfos» is the already familiar «Chlorpyrifos», and the preparation itself, like «Dimigran» and «Agran», is not included in the list of pesticides permitted for sale and use in Kazakhstan.

The akimat of the Nura District reported that within the framework of the programme «Ensuring sanitation of populated areas», approximately 4.6 million tenge was allocated from the district budget for work on disinsection and deratisation (rodent control).

It is noted that the work is carried out by the contractor organisation of the state enterprise «National Centre of Expertise» for the Karaganda Region. Disinsection in the district has been carried out since 10 May, using the same banned preparation «Agran».

As for other districts of the Karaganda Region, constructive responses from local executive bodies regarding disinsection work were not obtained.

For example, the akimat of the city of Karaganda stated that the request for disinsection is not within their competence. And the akimat of the Shet District reported that they would consider our «proposal for the treatment of green spaces». The local authorities of the city of Balkhash, the city of Temirtau, as well as the Abay and Karkaraly districts modestly remained silent about which preparations they use during treatment.

Meanwhile, the Department of Communal Services of the Bukhar-Zhyrau District of the Karaganda Region reported that there is no need to carry out treatment of green spaces in the district, and in the Aktogay District, funds for disinsection and deratisation in 2024 were not allocated.

The FBRC editorial team is once again convinced of the irresponsibility of officials when carrying out disinsection. We regularly urge regional akimats to take into account the scope of application of the preparations used during treatment, but what can one say if local authorities are not even willing to verify the legality of the pesticides used.
