Heads of the Ekibastuz Emergency Situations Department were convicted of corruption

In the Ekibastuz court of the Pavlodar region, a sentence was handed down to the head of the city emergency department D. Kukonev, his deputy Zh. Maimanov, and entrepreneur B. Zhumashev.

According to the press service of Anticor, Kukonev and Maimanov were found guilty of repeatedly receiving bribes totalling 7.4 million tenge from Zhumashev in exchange for concluding contracts for fire service provision with his company.

As a result, Kukonev was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison, and Maimanov and Zhumashev were sentenced to 7 years in prison.

They were also banned for life from holding positions in the civil service and the quasi-public sector. In addition, Kukonev was stripped of the rank of "Colonel of Civil Defence", and Maimanov of "Major of Civil Defence".

It will be recalled that in May last year, Anticor completed an investigation against the chairman of the fire service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as the heads of the Department of Emergency Situations of Shymkent and the Zhetysu region. The officials are suspected of receiving bribes from an entrepreneur amounting to more than 40 million tenge. An investigative court authorised a pre-trial detention measure for the suspects.

In July, for corruption, the head of a department of the Committee for Industrial Safety of the Ministry of Emergency Situations for the Pavlodar region, K. Temirkhanov, was sentenced to 3 years in prison. He was accused of receiving a bribe of 1.3 million tenge from a company director.

In August, former First Vice-Minister for Emergency Situations, Ibrahim Kulshimbayev, was sentenced to 5 years for abuse of power. According to the investigation, Kulshimbayev forced subordinates to build his own house.

In September, in Taraz, for corruption, the acting head of the branch of the State Institution "Centre for Disaster Medicine of the Ministry of Emergency Situations for the Zhambyl Region" was sentenced.
