The head of the district police department has been convicted of bribery in Shymkent.

A court in Shymkent has sentenced the head of a district police unit who was on trial for corruption. The case concerns the misuse of official powers during the investigation of criminal proceedings. The sentence has not yet entered into force.

WHAT THE OFFICIAL WAS CHARGED WITH

The criminal case was heard by the Specialised Inter-District Criminal Court of Shymkent. The defendant was the local head of the police department for the Turun district of the Shymkent City Police Department.

The court found that, using his official position, he received 6 million tenge to downgrade the classification of an offence committed by another individual in a criminal case being handled by the same unit.

The case was classified under Part 2 of Article 366 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan ("Receiving a bribe").

In the end, the police officer was found guilty and sentenced to 6 years in prison. Also, under Article 49 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, he was stripped of his special rank.

The sentence has not entered into force.
