Residents of Karaganda found several bloodstained bags containing animal remains near an abandoned factory while walking their dogs.

WHAT WAS FOUND

According to Channel 31, bags containing dog heads and paws were lying along the road next to the abandoned enterprise. The discovery was made by two neighbours who were walking their pets.

One of them, Vasilina Kosovtsova, stated that she considers the incident to be animal cruelty and fears for the safety of domestic dogs.

Valentina Korneva noted that among the dead animals there could have been someone’s missing pet dog, and emphasised that it is unknown where the meat might have ended up.

The women called the police and filed a report.

CRIMINAL CASE OPENED

The deputy head of the city police department of Karaganda, Baurzhan Mukhamedzhanov, reported that the incident has been registered in the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations.

A criminal case has been opened under Article 316 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan (“Cruelty to Animals”). A pre-trial investigation is currently underway. The police have not disclosed any further details.

POSITION OF ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS

The head of the animal rescue rehabilitation centre “Qorǵau”, Inessa Radchenko, stated that such incidents in the region are not recorded for the first time. According to her, places where dogs were brought in dozens and handed over for meat have previously been found in Karaganda and other cities of the country.

She also noted that, in her opinion, such cases are subsequently closed. Radchenko emphasised that the problem may be widespread and pose a danger, as it is unknown what diseases the animals might have had.

HEALTH RISKS

Dietitian Luiza Duisenbiyeva reported that consuming dog meat is of no benefit. According to her, there is a risk of infection with parasites, possible poisoning, and the danger of contracting rabies.

In Kazakhstan, the sale and consumption of dog meat are officially prohibited. Laboratories do not carry out its analysis.
