Information is spreading online about the detention of the former head of the investigative department of the Karaganda regional police department, Rustam Kulkeev, who had been on the wanted list since 1 December 2023.

According to Patriotnews.kz, citing its sources, the Anti-Corruption Service and the Internal Security Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs detained Kulkeev at his home — at his registered address in Karaganda.

The former head of the investigative department is suspected of stealing mining equipment that had been seized as material evidence in a criminal case.

"A criminal case is being investigated against Kulkeev under Article 188, Part 4 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan 'Theft' and under Article 361 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan 'Abuse of Official Powers'", the statement reads.

It is noted that Kulkeev's subordinate, investigator Kanatov, is also a suspect in the case. He is currently in a pre-trial detention centre.

For context, Rustam Kulkeev was put on the wanted list in December last year. It was reported that shortly before this, he had been dismissed from his position as head of the investigative department.
