A verdict has been delivered in Astana for the Chief Commercial Officer of JSC NAC Kazatomprom on charges of abuse of official powers (Article 361, Part 4, Paragraph 3 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan).
According to the press service of the Astana courts, in 2021 the defendant entered into three short-term contracts for the sale of uranium after the two-month deadline for concluding them had expired, at a reduced price. These actions caused damage to the state amounting to 16.5 billion tenge.
The Chief Commercial Officer then entered into another 10 contracts for the sale of uranium at a reduced price, causing the state damage totalling 3.6 billion tenge. It is noted that under these contracts he received remuneration in the form of a bonus totalling approximately 9 million tenge.
The victim’s representative requested that the civil claim for more than 20 billion tenge be satisfied. The defendant, for his part, did not admit guilt and asked to be acquitted.
Ultimately, the court found the Chief Commercial Officer of JSC Kazatomprom guilty and sentenced him to 4 years and 6 months of imprisonment with confiscation of property and a lifelong ban on holding positions in the civil service and the quasi-public sector.
Additionally, the court ordered a submission to the President regarding the deprivation of the convicted individual of his state award – the ‘Eren eñbegi úshin’ medal.
