The former general director of the investment company China Huarong International Holding Bai Tianhui was executed by court order after being found guilty of accepting bribes totalling over 1.108 billion yuan (79.6 billion tenge).
According to China Central Television (CCTV), the court deemed the amount of illegal remuneration to be 'particularly large' and warranting the maximum penalty.
The investigation established that from 2014 to 2018, Bai Tianhui used his official powers in the subsidiary structures of the China Huarong Asset Management company to obtain illegal payments from related business entities. According to court representatives, 'the defendant's actions caused serious damage to state interests'.
In May last year, the court of first instance sentenced Bai Tianhui to death for accepting bribes on an especially large scale, deprived him of political rights for life, and ordered the confiscation of all his personal property.
In February this year, the court of appeal dismissed the defence's complaint and upheld the sentence. The court confirmed the conclusions of the previous hearing and stated that 'the severity of the consequences and the scale of the corruption necessitate the imposition of the strictest possible punishment'.
It is worth recalling that in December last year, in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, executed was former secretary of the party-industry committee of the Hohhot Economic and Technological Development Zone, Li Jianping.
While holding leadership positions, he embezzled over 1.43 billion yuan (102.8 billion tenge) from the state. In addition, the official accepted bribes totalling over 577 million yuan (41.4 billion tenge) and misappropriated over 1 billion yuan (71.9 billion tenge).
