Prosecutors in the Mangystau region uncovered embezzlement during an audit of the legality of spending budget funds at a sports institution.
According to the press service of the agency, between 2018 and 2023, the chief accountant of the regional centre for national sports illegally appropriated budget funds totalling 117 million tenge.
"In connection with this fact, the regional prosecutor's office conducted an investigation, following which the criminal case was sent to court under Part 2 of Article 371 (negligence) and Part 4 of Article 189 (embezzlement) of the Criminal Code," the statement said.
The head of the institution was found guilty of improper performance of their duties, and on the basis of the Law "On Amnesty in Connection with the 30th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan" they were released from criminal punishment.
However, the amnesty did not help the chief accountant avoid serving a criminal sentence - they were found guilty of embezzling budget funds and sentenced to 7 years in prison.
For context, in Astana, the former head of the Republican State Enterprise "Directorate for Sports Development", Samat Yergaliyev, who was accused of abusing official powers, was convicted. The damage caused by their actions amounted to 113 million tenge.
In June, it became known that the chief accountant of the Shymkent Medical and Sports Dispensary of the City Department of Physical Culture and Sports had been awarding themselves and other employees unjustifiably inflated salaries. Over two years, the institution's employees were overpaid 22,218,531 tenge.
