Residents of the village of Saumalkol in the North Kazakhstan Region have reported mass bird deaths in the area of Lake Saumalkol and have linked the situation to ongoing pollution of the reservoir. Villagers are demanding an independent environmental inspection and identification of the sources of pollution.

WHAT IS WORRYING THE RESIDENTS

According to the Telegram channel «HALYQSTAN», residents of the Ayirtau District are reporting a deterioration in the ecological situation around Lake Saumalkol. On social media, they are publishing photographs and video recordings in an attempt to draw the attention of the authorities and ecologists.

According to the villagers, sewage has been discharged into the reservoir for a long time. The residents link this to the activities of the utility company «Ayirtau Commun Service».

WHAT CHANGES THE VILLAGERS HAVE NOTICED

Locals claim that the condition of the lake has noticeably worsened. According to them, the reservoir was previously a recreational area and a habitat for swans, ducks, and geese.

The state of the fauna is causing particular concern. Villagers are reporting bird deaths and claim that the number of waterfowl in the lake area has sharply declined.

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE AUTHORITIES' RESPONSE

Back in April, local authorities reported that repair work was being carried out at the facility and that pumping equipment was being replaced.

However, residents believe these measures do not address the question of the causes of the ongoing pollution. They are demanding that the sources of pollution be identified and that a public assessment be given of the actions of those responsible.

WHAT DEMANDS ARE THE RESIDENTS MAKING

The villagers are insisting on an independent environmental inspection. They are also calling for the causes of the pollution to be determined and for clarification of who should be held responsible for any potential damage to the environment.
