In Astana, a heart, a lung and a liver were retrieved from a posthumous donor for transplantation to three patients on the waiting list. The donor's family agreed to the organ retrieval.
HOW THE DONATION PROCESS WENT
According to the Ministry of Health, during the donation process doctors retrieved a heart, a lung and a liver. The organs are intended for transplantation to patients awaiting a transplant.
The process involved intensive care specialists, transplant specialists, donor coordinators, air ambulance specialists and other medical professionals. The Ministry of Health separately expressed its gratitude to the donor's relatives for the decision they made.
HOW MANY TRANSPLANTS WERE CARRIED OUT IN KAZAKHSTAN
Since the beginning of 2026, 132 potential posthumous donors have been identified in Kazakhstan and 205 transplants have been carried out.
According to the ministry, the rise in the number of donation processes began in 2025. That year, 18 donation processes were carried out, which is three times more than the figure for the previous year. The number of transplants reached 68. By comparison, in 2023, 19 organs were transplanted, and in 2024 — 23.
WHICH ORGANS WERE TRANSPLANTED IN 2026
As of 11 September 2026, 13 multi-organ donation processes have been carried out in Kazakhstan. From posthumous donors, 42 transplants were performed: 14 kidneys, 9 livers, 11 hearts, 4 lungs and 4 corneas.
CONTEXT
Earlier, Aida Balayeva publicly stated that she consented to posthumous organ donation. According to her, she made this decision after watching the documentary film “4,739”, dedicated to people awaiting a transplant in the country.
