Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan Aida Balayeva has publicly announced her consent to posthumous organ donation. According to her, she made this decision after watching the documentary “4,739”, which focuses on people awaiting transplants in the country.
WHAT AIDA BALAYEVA SAID
As Aida Balayeva reported on her Facebook page, the decision to become a posthumous donor is an entirely personal choice for each individual and should not be made under any pressure.
The minister noted that, if one day her loved ones were faced with making such a decision, she would want them to understand the importance of giving others a chance at life.
“I responsibly declare that I give my consent to posthumous donation. Because one person’s decision can give another the opportunity to keep living against all odds,” wrote Aida Balayeva.
WHAT IS THE SITUATION WITH TRANSPLANTS IN KAZAKHSTAN
According to data cited by Aida Balayeva, there are currently 4,739 people awaiting transplants in Kazakhstan, including 125 children.
She also reported that around 90% of transplant operations in the country are carried out thanks to living related donors. Meanwhile, the share of posthumous donation is less than 10%.
WHY THE MINISTER CALLED FOR RESPECTING CHOICE
According to Aida Balayeva, the topic of donation requires careful handling, as it affects both people waiting for organ transplants and families grieving the loss of a loved one.
She emphasised that discussions about posthumous donation should involve no pressure or judgment. In the minister’s view, this subject must be approached with understanding, responsibility, and respect for human life.
